I think we can all agree that cleaning the microwave can be such a chore but it’s essential to do so because we use it to heat our food. It gets dirty easily due to the food particles and grease getting on its walls.
Despite all this, there’s some good news because microwave cleaning can be easily done just by using the lemon hack. How do you do this? Here’s some insights about this cleaning method.

Homemade Cleaners…Or nah?
Homemade cleaning products work just as well as store-bought cleaners for most of your daily cleaning tasks. There are plenty of great benefits for making your own cleaning solutions.
- Avoid allergens: Many people suffer from skin conditions like dermatitis and eczema. Making your own cleaning products lets you control exactly what’s included in the solution and avoid some of the harsh chemicals in name brand products.
- Cost efficient: Making your own products is definitely a good way to save money. A handful of products (such as white vinegar, lemon, dishwashing liquid, baking soda and a spray bottle) are usually all you need to make a variety of cleaners for various purposes.
- Safe for kids and pets: Without the hazardous ingredients of manufactured products, you don’t have to worry about putting poison control on speed dial. With ingredients, there is no harm to your little ones if it’s accidently consumed.
- Sustainability: Natural cleaning products are non-toxic and better for the environment. Not only does it keep your breathing air clear inside the home, but you can also feel good about protecting the earth for future generations. Source: True Citrus
What You’ll Need
Materials
- 1 Lemon
- 1 Cup Tap Water
- 1 Microwave Safe Bowl
Instructions
- Prepare the Lemon Solution
Fill a microwave-safe bowl (like a glass Pyrex) with about one cup of tap water. Slice a lemon in half, squeeze the juice from both halves into the water, and then drop the rinds into the bowl.
- Heat and Steam
Place the bowl in the center of the microwave and heat on high until the water boils, approximately three minutes. Keep the microwave door closed and let it sit for an additional five minutes to allow the steam to loosen any stuck-on grime.
- Wipe Down
Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave—it will be hot. Using a clean cloth, wipe down all interior surfaces of the microwave, including the ceiling, walls, floor, and door. The steam will have loosened any food splatters, making them easy to clean. Source: The Spruce
Why Lemons? Can You Use Other Things?
We use lemons or lemon juice to clean the microwave because lemons are acidic and they smell nice. But you can use any citrus fruit or non-toxic acid. If you don’t have a lemon or a bottle of lemon juice, you can also use:
- An orange or fresh-squeezed orange juice (but not orange juice from concentrate0
- Lime or lime juice
- Grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Each of these will also help clean the inside of your microwave and make your microwave smell pretty awesome when you’re done. Source: Forest Woods Apartments
