Maintenances Tips for Your BBQ Grills

 June 26, 2025

Many of us love grilling BBQs especially on a hot, sunny day. This cooking method is a unique way of preparing delicious meals while enjoying the outdoors. However, just like any other appliance in your home, this one deserves some maintenance from time to time as well.

Caring for it properly will ensure that it functions optimally and will last for many years. If you think that maintenance is due to your beloved BBQ grill, then here are some tips to get you started.

Igniter check

A reliable igniter means your grill is ready when you are. If there’s not click or spark when you press the igniter, check the battery to make sure it’s in good condition and replace it if needed. If the battery is okay, or if it doesn’t use a battery, gently rub the igniter with soft sandpaper to remove any debris.

Keep the hinges lubricated

Stiff hinges can be a real headache. Regular lubrication ensures your grill’s lid operates smoothly, letting you focus on the cooking, not the creaking. Use either Teflon spray or WD-40 to keep the hinges lubricated. Source: Sears Home Services

Clean after every use

A cat cleans itself. Your grill is not a cat, so you’re on the hook for maintaining its hygiene.

After you’ve finished cooking and your grill has cooled down a bit, grab a grill brush and give those grates a good scrub. This helps remove any leftover food particles and prevents rust. If you’ve got a gas grill, don’t forget to clean the burners, too.

A clean grill not only lasts longer but also cooks better, and who doesn’t want that?

Check for gas leaks

You don’t want to mess with gas leaks.

If you’re using a gas grill, you can check for leaks with the soapy water test. Mix a bit of dish soap with water and brush it on the connections. If you see bubbles forming, you’ve got a leak. Tighten the connections and test again.

Rust buildup

Rust is another common issue, especially for grills exposed to the elements. To combat rust, periodically inspect all grill parts for signs of corrosion. As an early intervention, apply a rust-inhibiting primer to affected areas. For safety reasons, we recommend replacing parts that are significantly rusted.

Uneven heating

Uneven heating is often due to clogged burner ports or misaligned burners. Clean the burners thoroughly and check their alignment. For charcoal grills, make sure the coals are evenly distributed for consistent heat. Source: This Old House
