Reasons For a Noisy Dishwasher

 April 17, 2026

Hearing strange noises in your dishwasher is not uncommon or for any appliance for that matter. Usually, it’s nothing to worry about and some of these issues can be easily resolved.

If this is happening to your dishwasher right now, then you can check out these common issues to see if it aligns with its current situation.

Dishes Loaded Too Close Together

This is one of the most common reasons your dishwasher is loud. If your dishes are loaded too close together, they will bang against each other and make a lot of noise. To fix this problem, simply rearrange your dishes so that they are not touching each other.

If you have any large pots or pans, make sure to place them in the middle of the dishwasher so that they don’t bang against the sides. Also, make sure that all of your dishes are facing downwards. This will help to reduce the amount of noise they make when the water is spraying them.

Obstructed Spray Arm

Another common cause of high dishwasher noise levels is an obstructed spray arm. This could also be the cause if your dishwasher leaves dishes dirty. If your spray arm is blocked by something, it will not be able to spin freely and will make a lot of noise. To get back to a quiet dishwasher, simply remove the obstruction and make sure that the spray arm can move freely. Source: Lake Appliance Repair

Bad Water Inlet Valve

Another reason your dishwasher could make that noise is a bad water inlet valve. This valve opens and closes during various stages of the cycle to let water into the dishwasher. But over time, the diaphragm deteriorates and can cause a high-pitched buzzing or squealing sound (sometimes, it’s a knocking sound!).

If you start a cycle and notice a loud buzzing or screeching sound around the two-minute mark, the water inlet valve is definitely the culprit and must be replaced!

Loose Drain Hose

The drain hose is critical for your dishwasher to run correctly — it gets all the dirty water out of the machine! But if the hose isn’t secured correctly, it can move around during the draining process and cause a loud thumping noise. If that happens, use cable ties to tie down the hose, and the noise should stop! Source: Iowa Appliance Center

Worn Circulation Pump

A loud buzzing or high-pitched sound emanating from your dishwasher might be an issue with the circulation pump. The bearings of your circulation pump can become worn out, leaving your dishes looking dirty after a cycle. Source: Angi
