Cleaning Your Grill After Winter Season

 March 30, 2026

The winter season is coming to an end and if your barbecue grill has been in storage for months, then it’s time to do some maintenance to get it ready for the next season. Here’s how to get your barbecue grill back into its top grilling conditions.

Cleaning Your Grill After Winter Season

  1. Have Your Cleaning Supplies Ready

You wouldn’t cook in a dirty kitchen, so why would you grill on a dirty BBQ? In order to sanitize and deep clean your grill, you will need the following products: brush for cleaning your cooking grids, a small pail of hot water, dish soap, a venturi brush, a 1/16” drill bit (provided when you first purchased your grill), replacement grease cups, a spatula, stainless steel cleaner, and some fine sandpaper. 1. Remove Any Debris

If you’ve found that nothing needs urgent replacement, open up the lid of your grill and get rid of any leftover debris. From leaves that have fallen into your grill, to old charcoal you never cleaned out after its last use, you’re going to want a clean, fresh surface for when you cook your favorite cut of steak during the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

  1. Scrub Your Grill Down

After you’ve removed your debris, remove your grates and set them aside. Your next step is to use warm, soapy water and a scrubber to clean out the inside of your grill. Remember, to avoid chemicals like oven cleaner that can corrode essential parts of your grill. Source: Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse

  1. Carefully Clean Any Burners and Tubes

If your grill has gas burners, you don’t need to remove them to clean them. Carefully clean them with steel wool and a rag. Inspect the burner tubes (where the flames come out) for any blockage. You can remove the burner tubes and scrub them clean as needed.

  1. Clean the Catch Pan

The catch pan, also known as the grease trap or drip pan, is on the bottom of your grill, and it does exactly as the name implies: catches all the dripping grease and debris when you’re cooking. Remove it, scrub it with a wire brush, and then wash it quickly with soapy water. Source: Angi
